Earthquake-induced deformations of a bridge abutment underlain by liquefied soil may be reduced by the restraining forces that come from the pile foundation and bridge superstructure. The reduced abutment displacements may, in turn, reduce the loads or displacement demands that are imposed on the piles. Design methods that account for this "pile pinning" effect have been used in practice and included in the recent national guidelines, but have not previously been evaluated against physical data. These pile pinning analysis methods are being evaluated against the results of dynamic centrifuge model tests.

Collaborative Research: Demonstration of NEES for Studying Soil-Foundation-Structure Interaction. This collaborative project involves eighteen researchers from ten universities. The research plan involves four primary components: (1) four complementary experimental programs which will investigate key aspects of SFSI, (2) refinement of computational simulation models for SFSI, (3) management of the data and metadata generated in the investigation, and (4) outreach to the earthquake engineering community. Conduct three centrifuge tests to study key aspects of SFSI.

Pile Foundations in Liquefied and Laterally Spreading GroundE-Defense will make two geotechnical shaking table tests for soil-pile-structure interaction studies and lateral spreading studies, for a period of two years from 2005 under Dai-Dai-Toku project. Several series of centrifugal shaking table tests will be planned using NEES facilities (Davis and RPI) under E-defense/NEES collaboration. The centrifuge tests include a scale model test to be conducted at E-defense.
